Stephens received his walking papers shortly after filming began on this movie version of Stephen Sondheim's musical. the Frederick Egerman role then went back to Len Cariou, who had played the character for over a year on Broadway. Having been informed that he and co-star Elizabeth Taylor didn't have the "right chemistry," Stephens told the press, "We're actors, not pharmacists."
