According to Mel Brooks' commentary on the DVD, production actually began with Young in the role of the Waco Kid, but, due to advanced alcoholism, he was unable to continue. Gene Wilder, who had unsuccessfully lobbied for the part, was then called to step into the role on just a few days' notice.
