When Meryl Streep was attached to the project, Aleandro was slated to play her mother. When Streep bowed out and Tracy Ullmann stepped in, the the role of the mother went to Joan Plowright.

Meryl wasn't available to play the part of the wife who tries to kill Kevin Kline, so she suggested her friend (and "Plenty" co-star), Tracey Ullman.
