Director Lewis Gilbert felt that Dors was a better choice for the part of real-life heroine Violette Szabo.
She was first choice for the role of Brenda, the married woman who has an affair with Jack-the-lad Arthur Seton. Dors' husband/manager, Richard Dawson, advised her against taking the part which she later regreted.
