Ellen Burstyn initially considered asking Barbara Loden to direct the film but decided on Martin Scorsese as she wanted the film to have a "rough" look to it.

At the insistence of star Burt Lancaster, and against the wishes of director Frank Perry, Barbara Loden's one scene was re-shot with Janice Rule. Sydney Pollack directed that scene only.
