In the 40s, Columbia Pictures kept Ann Miller as a "threat" to Rita Hayworth. When Miss Hayworth got married, the film was turned over to Miss Miller, but she got married too, so it was years before it actually came to fruition.
Miss Miller had been promised the role of the campy swimming star, but MGM decided she and the film's star, Cyd Charisse, were too similar to be in the same film. Miss Miller asked out of her contract as a result.
In 1950, Miller was announced for the role of Kathy, but it was eventually played by Debbie Reynolds.
