After Robin and Marian she was offered the leading role in this project. She declined it saying she was too old for it.

Her name was attached to this project until William Wyler bowed out as director and Milton Katselas took over.

Joanne told Rex Reed in 1974 that Ann Stanley was the only film role that wanted and didn't get.

Director William Wyler agreed to return to films after his 1970 retirement and direct this film, providing Audrey Hepburn return as well after her 1967 retirement. Audrey agreed but only if the film was made in Rome. The producer disagreed and Milton Katselas was chosen to direct Liv Ullmann instead.
