Lambert tested for the part of the mysterious Miranda but was not initially cast. However director Peter Weir called her back when he became disappointed with Ingrid Mason as Miranda. Mason graciously accepted the minor role of Rosamund.

Merchant was cast as Mrs. Appleyard but fell ill while travelling to Australia for filming.
