Berkeley was fired from the film after the studio was unhappy about the footage he had shot with Judy Garland. Judy disliked Berkeley intensely after he had caused her collapse on the set of Girl Crazy, so why MGM hired him again to direct Garland is a mystery. Judy would also be fired from the film.

When Judy Garland was dismissed from the project, leggy and hugely popular movie star Grable lobbied Darryl F. Zanuck to loan her to MGM to play the role.

Frank Morgan who was cast as Buffalo Bill died whilst the film was on hiatus in between Judy Garland being fired and Betty Hutton hired to play Annie Oakley.

Rogers wanted to play Annie and famously said "I would have done the part for one dollar if someone had asked me."

Director Charles Walters replaced Busby Berkeley and, later, Walters himself was replaced.
